Nicolaus Copernicus

(1473-1543AD)

Copernicus was born in Torun Poland, and was the first, after of 1000 years to elaborate of change the Ptolemaic model created by Ptolemy. Copernicus decided to theorize the idea of a "heliocentric" universe, meaning sun-centered. Copernicus claimed that the sun was the center of the universe, with the planets and stars orbiting around it. Many fellow astronomers criticized Copernicus' theory, claiming that the Earth was in fact the center of the universe, but Copernicus stayed strong with his belief that the sun was a fixed point for all of the planets' motion, simply because of its size.
