Hipparchos

(190-120BC)

Born in Bithynia (Turkey), Hipparchos was an extremely skilled observer of skies. So skilled that he was able to create a catalog of the stars, this catalog included over 1000 stars, which was revolutionary for his time. These stars had accurate positions, and magnitudes (brightness) based on a 1 to 6 number scale. This catalogue still holds up (for the most part) to today's technology regarding stars.

Hipparchos is said to be the creator of trigonometry, which was a very useful tool when accurately cataloging stars the way Hipparchos did. It was even more of an amazing feat that he did this without the aid of a telescope, and simply used his naked eye.

Hipparchos cataloged over 1000 stars, with very precise measurements, and all without the aid of a telescope!
